Maximise your readiness for birth
Pregnancy is a time of rapid change and adjustment on all levels, the most obvious being the physical. Massage and bodywork are used in most cultures to ease women through the demands of pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period. They are safe and natural ways to significantly improve your wellbeing and confidence as a pregnant and birthing mother.
There are countless mind-body approaches to birth preparation which take into account that our thoughts, emotions and bodies are inextricably linked. Most of us have lifestyles which call upon us to operate mostly from our thoughts at the expense of being deeply in touch with our body intelligence. Women who follow their bodily instincts with trust and surrender are often more able to meet the challenges of birthing their babies. A deeply nurturing and holistic style of massage or bodywork can meet a range of needs in pregnant women, and the power of touch is not to be under-estimated!
Among the many benefits of massage and bodywork are:
∗ encouraging you to become more present in your body as you approach birth
∗ soothing your nervous system and promoting deep relaxation, surrender and trust in your body
∗ releasing old patterns of thinking and behaving that no longer serve you
∗ enhancing blood and lymphatic circulation to maximise nutrient delivery and elimination of toxins
∗ supporting healthy development of your baby
∗ decreasing muscle and joint pain, tension and cramps
∗ reducing nausea, swelling and headache, and normalising blood pressure
∗ promoting deeper breathing
∗ improving sleep and general wellbeing
∗ increasing flexibility of muscles for birthing
∗ increasing pelvic awareness and opening for vaginal birth
∗ facilitating optimal recovery after baby’s birth
∗ promoting milk supply and breastfeeding
In a holistic setting, massage and bodywork are often combined with other anchors such as pregnancy-safe essential oils, soothing music and energy healing to maximise relaxation effects. It is highly recommended that massage and bodywork are offered by therapists qualified in pregnancy massage with a clear understanding of the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and birth to ensure best practice for your specific needs in each trimester. This would include a detailed history of your pregnancy in an initial consultation and a review of any changes in subsequent sessions as your body adapts to your growing baby.

Special Tip: Belly Massage For Pregnancy
Self-massage of your belly in pregnancy has many benefits: it helps increase the elasticity and tone of your skin, soothes away growing pains in your muscles and ligaments, connects you to your baby regularly and allows you nurture and celebrate the beauty of your body as it accommodates your baby’s growth.
To maximise the impact, begin a daily ritual of massage after showering early in your pregnancy. Use a pure wheatgerm or almond oil with a few drops of pregnancy-safe essential oils and work with one or both hands at once. Apply light to medium pressure in smooth, circular strokes for at least two minutes, sending loving thoughts to your baby as you massage. Toward the end of your pregnancy, massage down the sides of your belly, and from your ribs toward your navel to improve the elasticity of your abdominal muscles.
Pre-blend your special belly oil in a bottle of carrier oil for regular use.
For every 50 ml pure wheatgerm or almond carrier oil,
add 5 drops each of these essential oils:
sweet orange to uplift
neroli, ylang ylang or sandalwood to calm
